Ryerson engineering students apologize after hazing incident

TORONTO, Ont. – School officials accepted an apology Monday from a group of Ryerson University engineering students who were thrust into the spotlight this week after a highly-criticized hazing incident.

No one will be disciplined for the incident, with Ryerson officials saying the focus of Monday’s meeting was education and prevention rather than punishment.

Discussion was had and Ryerson says the engineering society is working to develop new policies to ensure a similar incident is not repeated.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne spoke out Monday following the incident at Ryerson University, which involved a group of engineering students trying to become orientation leaders during next year’s frosh activities.

YouTube footage shows the aspiring student leaders in their underwear crawling through ice and slush on an outdoor university pond while organizers in blue coveralls shout at them from the sidelines.

Some of the hecklers threw snowballs at the participants, and at one point a male bystander appears to spank a female student as she crawls by.

Ryerson President Sheldon Levy issued a statement calling the frosh leader initiation event both shocking and demeaning.
