Twenty-eight arrests Thursday as part of “Project Traveller” meant a busy day in an Etobicoke courtroom.
Nine suspects in the gang sweep stood before a judge to face a variety of charges, including participating in a criminal organization, and trafficking guns and drugs
The procedures began at around 2 p.m. at the Metro West Etobicoke courthouse.
One “Project Traveller” suspect was reportedly captured in a now-infamous photo with Rob Ford.
Another man believe to be in that photo, Anthony Smith, 21, was shot dead in March in front of a downtown nightclub. The suspect in court on Thursday (blurred above) was targetted in that same shooting and can’t be named because of a publication ban related to that ongoing case. He was denied bail Thursday night.
Two men are in custody facing charges in relation to the fatal double shooting.
In court today facing charges related to “Project Traveller” were:
- Siyadin Abdi
- Ahmed Abdullahl
- Hashim Abdullahl
- Abdullahi Harun
- Abdinaim Hussein
- Monir Kasim
- Danyal Khan
- Liban Siyad
Thursday morning’s raids targeted a group known as the Dixon Bloods, who police allege were responsible for a slew of serious crimes, including gun smuggling. The group has also been linked to homicides, police said, without citing specific cases.
Nine people were arrested in Windsor and 19 people were arrested in Toronto when more than 100 officers descended on an apartment complex in the Dixon Road and Islington Avenue area around 5 a.m. Thursday.
More suspects will appear in court on Friday, and police are expected to hold a news conference on Friday morning to update the case.
