Ai Weiwei artwork on display at Nathan Phillips Square

A monumental work by renowned Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei has been unveiled at Nathan Phillips Square.

The installation called Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads made its debut at the square’s reflecting pool on Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Rob Ford, Coun. Krystyn Wong-Tam and Art Gallery of Ontario executive director Elizabeth Smith were at the unveiling.

The installation which features 12 bronze animal heads representing the Chinese zodiac is the only Canadian stop for the work, which has been shown in nine cities, including Sao Paolo and New York, and will be in Toronto until Sept. 22.

“We’re so proud to be chosen as the only Canadian city,” to host the collection, the mayor said.

The AGO has partnered with the City of Toronto to bring the sculpture series to Nathan Phillips Square.

Ai Weiwei, whose exhibition According to What? begins at the AGO on Aug. 17, will be the featured artist at this year’s Nuit Blanche on Oct. 5.
