Coun. Milczyn to run for Ontario Liberals in byelection

A member of Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee has announced his bid for a seat in Premier Kathleen Wynne’s government.
Coun. Peter Milczyn said on Tuesday he will run as the Liberal candidate in an upcoming byelection in the riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore in “a very unexpected turn of events.”
Milczyn said when former education minister Laurel Broten stepped down late last month, he started getting phone calls from people urging him to run.
“I’m very happy with the direction of Kathleen Wynne’s government in terms of building transit in this city and in this region, in terms of supporting the economy, in terms of a lot of progressive policies,” he said.
“It just seemed that it was … time for all the work that I’ve done at city hall, to take it to the next level and continue to work on the issues I feel so strongly about.”
According to Canadian Press sources, Wynne will call five byelections for Aug. 1 on Wednesday.
Besides Broten, former premier Dalton McGuinty (Ottawa South), former finance minister Dwight Duncan (Windsor-Tecumseh), former energy minister Chris Bentley (London West) and Margarett Best (Scarborough-Guildwood) have all quit since February.
