Ontario Provincial Police will be out in full force during the long weekend on all major road and waterways cracking down on distracted drivers.
Police say so far this year, 47 of the 177 deaths on provincially-patrolled roads involved distracted driving, compared with the 32 impaired driving-related deaths.
They say that with children returning to school next week, distracted driving is of particular concern.
The provincial force says most people would refuse to get into a vehicle with an impaired driver, but they face a similar risk with a distracted one and should speak out if they notice a driver is distracted.
Boaters and off-road vehicle users are also being warned to expect a stronger police presence over the Labour Day weekend.
Provincial police report off-road vehicle deaths are up 80 per cent this year and marine fatalities are up more than 15 per cent.
