Riding the city’s subways, streetcars and buses could cost you more in 2014 if fare hikes proposed by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to help raise $36.5 million are approved on Wednesday.
In its 2014 staff budget report, the TTC is recommending a five-cent increase in the price of a single adult token, from $2.65 to $2.70.
The TTC is also considering scenarios that include cash fare hikes and varying increases to Metropasses.
Cash fares for adults would jump 25 cents from $3.00 to $3.25, 15 cents for seniors and students, from $2.00 to $2.15, and five cents for children from .75 cents to .80 cents. Under that scenario, a regular adult Metropass would jump $2.50 from $128.50 to $131.
Another option would see cash fares frozen, and a regular Metropass spiking $5.25 to $133.75.
There would be proportionate increases in all other fares effective Jan. 1, 2014. (See full list here.)
CityNews’ Pamela Seatle is tweeting from the meeting.
In the report, which is being considered at a commission meeting on Wednesday afternoon, the TTC said the hikes would cover “inflationary increases in costs.”
The report will be forwarded to the city for submission into the city budget process and to determine subsidy levels.
The TTC anticipates a subsidy level from the city of $428.1 million — a number that falls $6 million short of its projected budget requirements.
“Staff will continue to explore in-year cost containment measures and efficiencies to address this funding gap,” the report stated.
“The TTC remains the least subsidized transit system on a per rider basis in North America.”
