Toronto Hydro is looking at rate increases to help pay for upgrades of aging equipment, but it needs the approval of the Ontario Energy Board first.
According to the utility, approximately 40 per cent of power outages are caused by aging equipment and it’s rebuilding its infrastructure to help address grid reliability and safety issues.
As part of the process, the utility is conducting an anonymous online customer survey on its 2015-2019 distribution system plan. The survey will then be presented to the board, which has the final say on any potential rate increases.
“We’re asking our customers to look at our plan and tell us their preferences on priorities and the pace of Toronto Hydro’s proposed electricity investment,” Paul Sommerville, the utility’s executive vice-president of regulatory affairs and general counsel, said in a release on Tuesday.
“This plan will have an effect on rates so it is important that our customers engage with us.”
