Scrabble allowing players to add to game dictionary

For the first time in nearly a decade, changes are coming to Scrabble.

Hasbro, the maker of the popular board game, announced Wednesday it would allow players to add a word to the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary.

“Our language changes faster than ever today,” Peter Sokolowski, editor-at-large at dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster, said in a statement.

“It’s great to include a word in the new edition that dedicated Scrabble players are eager to use on the board.”

The new fan chosen word will be published alongside thousands of other new additions in an upcoming edition of the dictionary, the first update to the guide in nine years.

The new dictionary, the fifth edition, will be published in August.

Fans can nominate their favourite word on the Hasbro Game Night Facebook page until March 28.

“The Scrabble Word Showdown will let fans nominate and vote on words that are fun and relevant for today’s players,” said Jonathan Berkowitz, Hasbro’s vice-president of marketing.

“We are excited to see which word rises to the top and makes its way into the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary.”

After fans have submitted their chosen words, Scrabble and Merriam-Webster will unveil sixteen words from the pool of nominations for the bracket-style Scrabble Word Showdown. Fans will cast their votes, again on the Facebook page, until it is narrowed down to one final word.

The winner will be revealed on April 10.
