University of Calgary to honour 5 stabbing victims

The University of Calgary is planning to hold a final memorial Wednesday for the five victims of the city’s worst mass murder.

Alberta Premier Dave Hancock will be among the dignitaries attending what the university is calling a “celebration of life” for Lawrence Hong, Kaitlin Perras, Jordan Segura, Joshua Hunter and Zackariah Rathwell.

Hunter, Hong and Segura all studied at the University of Calgary.

The five were stabbed to death on April 15 at a house party marking the end of the school year.

Another partygoer, Matthew de Grood, was charged with five counts of first-degree murder in their deaths and has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

He is scheduled to return to court in May.
