A 23-year-old man has been arrested for aiding a wanted suspect in a homicide that occurred during a basketball tournament at a Rexdale community centre last November.
Tyrone Knott, 28, was arrested and charged Monday with accessory after the fact to murder in the death of Neeko Mitchell, 25, who was gunned down outside the North Kipling Community Centre on Nov. 24, 2013.
Mitchell, who was “ambushed and killed execution-style” was Toronto’s 53rd homicide that year. Det. Sgt. Brian Borg said there’s no evidence to suggest that Mitchell had done anything before that night or on that night that contributed to his death.
He declined to say why Mitchell was targeted but that the reason was “one that I think people would be alarmed about.”
Borg said Thursday that there is also a Canada-wide arrest warrant for Kashana Duncan, 28, on the same accessory charge.
Borg said that he has spoken to her lawyer who has told her to turn herself in. But for whatever reason she’s chosen not to surrender, he said.
The two were described as associates or friends of Reshane Hayles-Wilson, 23, of Mississauga, who remains at large after an arrest warrant was issued Jan. 23 for first-degree murder in Mitchell’s death.
Borg said that Hayles-Wilson could be anywhere in Canada or even abroad. He added police “took great measures to apprehend him afterwards” and were “very close” to catching him.
He said there was no doubt in his mind that he poses a danger to the public and considers him to be violent.
Knott’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 14.
