2 dead in Etobicoke fire

Two people died in a fire at an Etobicoke home early Sunday morning.
Capt. Mike Strapko said it was before 3:30 a.m. when Toronto Fire Services learned of the blaze on Abigail Place, near Martin Grove and Dixon roads.
An 80-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman were found without vital signs in bedrooms at the back of the semi-detached house. Paramedics performed CPR, but the couple was pronounced dead soon after.
Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining unit, and the damage was limited to about $500,000.
“Some of that would be the design of the house,” said Bob O’Hallarn, Toronto Fire Services division commander.
“They must have had the brick walls going all the way up and separating it. But even so, it’ll still get through that with the intensity of that fire. So, [the firefighters] did a great job.”
The Ontario fire marshal was called in to investigate, but the fire is not considered suspicious.
