EXCLUSIVE: Suspected coywolf kills pet dog in Mississauga

A Mississauga woman watched helplessly as one of two suspected coywolves snatched her nine-year-old Chihuahua early Thursday morning, fatally snapping its neck while she futilely tried to scare it off.

“I was screaming at it, trying to get it to drop the dog,” said Nina. “It snapped the dog’s neck right in front of me and keep going.”

The attack happened on her driveway in the Lakeshore Road West and Mississauga Road North area at around 6:40 a.m.

Coywolves are a cross between coyote and wolf, and neighbourhood residents say they are frequently seen in the area around nearby Lorne Park.

“Quite a few times I have seen one walking down the street,” one woman said.

“They come all the time out of the park and just walk right up the street,” another added.

Signs have gone up in nearby green spaces warning people to avoid the parks between dusk and dawn, when the animals are known to prowl.

Mississauga Animal Services believes this is the third time this year that coywolves have attacked dogs in the city.

So far there are no plans to trap or remove the animals unless they become a threat to humans.
