EXCLUSIVE: Mystery couple found after proposal caught in background of photo

An Aurora woman turned to the power of the Internet to help find a couple getting engaged in the background of a photo taken over the weekend.

Rachel Stewart posted the photo, originally found on her friend’s phone, to Facebook on Tuesday in the hope of finding out the identity of the mystery couple.

“Not sure if the happy couple had any friends around to capture this proposal, so I’m positing this in hopes of them seeing it, or maybe someone else in these pages will recognize them!!” she said in her Facebook post.

According to the post, her friend hadn’t noticed the proposal happening behind her at the holiday tree in the Distillery District on Saturday until a few days later.

That’s when the hunt began — including sending an email to CityNews to ask for assistance.

Stewart thought her search had ended when someone claimed to know the couple but it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.

However, after the photo aired on The 5, word spread and the mystery couple was identified.

Dan Bennett of Cambridge and Kim Ball of Oshawa talked to CityNews reporter Melanie Ng about their happy day and how grateful they are to have a clear photo of the event.

They plan to marry next Sept. 19.
