Toronto opened a new and improved ice rink in Regent Park on Saturday.
City councillor Pam McConnell, the MLSE Foundation and Toronto Community Housing were on hand for the opening celebration at the rink, located at 480 Shuter St., north of Queen and east of River.
The event — which started at 11 a.m. — features a learn-to-skate clinic and autograph-signing session with Maple Leafs alumni such as Wendel Clark, Gary Leeman and Mark Osborne, as well as Hockey Canada alumni.
Improvements to the rink include new lighting, dasher boards and fencing.
The rink is the first component of the Regent Park athletic grounds — a sports facility scheduled to be finished next fall.
“The MLSE Foundation believes that all kids should have access to sport and the opportunity to develop lasting dreams on the playing field. The redevelopment of these athletic grounds in Regent Park is a key part of that vision. We are proud to be the leading funder of the Regent Park Athletic Grounds,” Michael Bartlett, Executive Director of the MLSE Foundation said in a release.
