TORONTO – Nina Dobrev is leaving “The Vampire Diaries.”
The Toronto-bred actress announced the news on Instagram, saying she always “wanted Elena’s story to be a six-season adventure.”
Dobrev, whose film credits include “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Chloe,” “Fugitive Pieces,” and “Away From Her,” said she was moving “on to the next chapter” of her life.
While on the show, she earned two Teen Choice Awards for tackling a double role as Elena Gilbert, a young girl caught between two vampire brothers, and as Katherine Pierce, a vampire the brothers knew in the nineteenth century.
Dobrev joined the CW/CTV Two show from “Degrassi: The Next Generation.”
Dobrev thanked fans for their “love, support and passion.”
“I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May,” Dobrev said in a post Monday night.
Dobrev said she wanted to “share this goodbye” with her fans.
“You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young ‘Degrassi’ girl from Canada showed up in L.A. to audition for ‘that “Twilight” TV show.'”
Dobrev was born in Bulgaria and moved to Canada at age two.
