4 face more than 100 charges in Driftwood shooting

Four people are facing more than 100 charges in a brazen shooting in northwest Toronto that sent five people to hospital.

Police say several people were standing outside a townhouse Driftwood Avenue, near Jane Street, just before 6 p.m. on Thursday when another group approached and began firing.

They say five of the people standing out front were shot.

One of the victims, a man in his 20s, suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting.

The others have serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit was called after one of the suspects was shot by police on Elmhurst Drive near Islington Avenue and Rexdale Boulevard.

“During the course of the arrests, one of those arrested was shot in an interaction with police,” police said in a release. “It is reported that person has non-life-threatening injuries.”

Sgt. Steve Hicks said there were many children in the area at the time. The incident took place near a high school and a community centre.

Hicks said he was running a youth program at the centre when he heard a commotion and rushed to the scene, where he found the five people who were shot. He said police know the five victims.

Brianna Mombourquette said the shooting happened right by the home where she lives with her family.

The teen said her sister ran downstairs and told the family she’d heard two gunshots and “someone saying ‘get down, get down.'”

Mombourquette, 15, said she went outside with her parents later but didn’t see anything, though her father saw someone get loaded on an ambulance and another person on the ground.

“I was scared and still am,” she said.

Akeem Bailey, 25, is charged with 30 offences; Clifton Vassel Youria, 29, is charged with 36 offences; Maurice Smith, 21, is charged with 25 offences, while Daniel Duarte-Alvarez, 20, of Mississauga, is charged with 21 offences.

Some of the charges include attempted murder, unauthorized possession of a firearm, failing to comply with a probation order, and discharging a firearm with the intent to wound and endanger life.

Bailey, Youria, and Smith — all from Toronto — were scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
