Gas prices expected to spike in Ontario, analyst predicts

Ontarians should be prepared for huge spikes in gas prices in the coming days, a Toronto analyst says.

Pump prices in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba jumped by 15 to 20 cents a litre on Wednesday as a direct result of a refinery problem in Indiana, En-Pro gas price expert Roger McKnight tells 680 NEWS.

The output from a British Petroleum refinery in Whiting, Indiana, has decreased significantly after an unplanned shutdown on Saturday, according to various reports. The Whiting plant is reportedly the seventh-largest refinery in the U.S., with an operational capacity of 413,000 barrels per day.

Gas stations throughout the Midwest get most of their fuel from the Whiting plant, and a spike in prices in the West followed a spike in Minneapolis, which was in response to a potential shortage in the Chicago area.

The Minneapolis spike will be felt in the Great Lakes on Friday, with a two-cent jump in Toronto and the GTA, with the price rising to an average price of 115.9 cents/litre at most gas stations.
