Police issue warning about magic mushrooms after two violent incidents

By News Staff

Eating magic mushrooms won’t necessarily turn you into a fun guy. Sure, you could throw on a Phish bootleg and stare at the wallpaper with a goofy grin for a few hours. Or, you could become extremely agitated, grab a knife, and end up being Tased by police.

The latter is known as a bad trip, and York Regional police say they encountered two of them on the weekend.

In a release, York police said they attended two separate Richmond Hill residences on Saturday and Sunday where people consumed mushrooms and became violent, arming themselves with knives.

“In both cases police responded and utilized a conducted energy weapon (CEW) to successfully de-escalate and disarm the suspects,” police said.

A quantity of mushrooms was seized from one of the homes, police say. The drugs have been sent to Health Canada for analysis.

“Magic mushrooms are illegal and can also be extremely dangerous,” police warn.

“As with any illegal drugs it is possible for them to be laced or contaminated with other harmful substances.”
