Police question Kitchener man after alleged threat toward Ted Rogers statue

A threat towards the Rogers Centre’s Ted Rogers statue caused a Kitchener Blue Jays fan some trouble.

A 25-year-old man received a visit from Waterloo Regional Police after allegedly tweeting – Jose Bautista gets a contract or the sculpture “is getting decimated.”

A second alleged tweet warned the statue could end up in Lake Ontario.

Rogers Communications, which owns the statue of the company’s late founder, spotted the tweet and alerted Toronto Police who then asked for the assistance of Waterloo Regional Police.

The alleged tweets, regarding the contract demands of the Jays slugger, date back to last month and led to the Toronto Police cybercrime investigation.

The man told the Toronto Star, “I’m aware that I did say something stupid. It’s not something that I should have put onto the Internet.”

However, as far as the police response is concerned, he says, “That was still aggressive of them in my opinion . . . If I had said that out loud, no one would have taken me seriously. And that’s kind of what Twitter’s for, a stream of consciousness.”

A Toronto Police spokesperson said, “I’m not sure what his intentions were, but it was reported to us and because it is a threat it is taken seriously.”
