A 24-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries after being shot during a early-morning confrontation with police in Brampton.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in.
The shooting happened outside a townhouse complex on Newhaven Manor, near Williams Parkway and Highway 410, just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
The SIU said police were responding to a disturbance call in one of the buildings when they confronted the armed man. There was a foot chase and an exchange of gunfire between him and police, which resulted in the man being shot.
The man was rushed to a trauma with multiple gunshot wounds. He is out of surgery but remains in critical condition.
Officers were not injured in the shooting.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
