In the annals of usually yawn-inducing police media releases, this one’s a doozy.
York Regional police allege a Markham man was not only driving while inebriated early Sunday morning, but passed out in a live lane — while he was texting.
The sordid tale somehow gets worse.
“The driver was slumped over the wheel, cellphone in hand, in mid-text message,” explained Constable Andy Pattenden.“When our officers were able to wake the driver, his foot came off the brake pedal and (he) ran into one of our cruisers.”
Police came across the vehicle at around 4:30 a.m. on the Highway 404 off-ramp at Steeles Avenue.
The 25-year-old driver was charged with impaired driving and drive with handheld communication device.
Police say he was one of 14 motorists charged with impaired-related offences between Friday and Sunday.
