Carroll announced on Tuesday that Premier Kathleen Wynne had appointed her as the candidate.

Carroll has been a councillor in Ward 33, Don Valley East, since 2003. Last November, she announced she was seeking the nomination.

The move from municipal to provincial politics comes at a time when Toronto Mayor John Tory is feuding with Wynne. After the most recent provincial budget, Tory accused Queen’s Park of turning its back on Toronto.

“The most crucial needs of the people of the city of Toronto were not met by this budget,” Tory told reporters on Friday.

Tory was hoping the province would announce it was matching federal funding on transit, but the budget confirmed its existing commitment with no new money coming to the city.

Without new money, Tory said the city won’t be able to afford to push forward with several transit plans – including the Downtown Relief Line – or any possible new projects that would move the city forward.
