Teenager arrested, 2 males wanted in cyclist’s murder in Little Portugal

By News Staff

Toronto homicide detectives say they have arrested a 17-year-old and are searching for two other male suspects after a cyclist was killed following an incident in Little Portugal on Saturday afternoon.

Police say they were called to the area of Frankish and Sheridan avenues, near Dundas Street West and Dufferin Street just before 5:30 p.m. following reports a cyclist had been struck by a car.

Police say he was riding his bike to work when a black Toyota SUV began following him. The car then struck him from behind.

The black SUV then mounted the curb and became lodged on a cement block and metal fence post.

Three males got out of the vehicle and began to allegedly strike and beat the victim before running off.

Paramedics initially told CityNews they transported the male victim to hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, but based on a post-mortem examination, police now say the victim died of a stab wound to the chest.

The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Aaron Rankine-Wright of Toronto.

Homicide detectives believe the victim was targeted and all three suspects had “a common purpose.”

One 17-year-old male has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He appeared in court on Sunday.

The other two suspects are also wanted for first-degree murder. Police describe the suspects as male, in their late teens or early 20s and wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
