If summer roadwork on the Don Valley Parkway wasn’t enough, another major construction project on a city-run expressway kicked off last night.

The westbound Gardiner Expressway ramp to Yonge, Bay and York streets was shut down starting at 10 p.m. and isn’t scheduled to reopen until Sept. 16.

The work is part of Phase 1 of the Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan and will include removing and replacing existing asphalt, joint assemblies, approach slabs, light posts, barrier walls, and curbs. New deck drains will also be installed, among other upgrades to existing infrastructure.

The city says work will mostly be conducted around-the-clock, with the most disruptive work expected to be completed by 11 p.m.

However, the city adds that in some instances disruptive work must be performed overnight for the safety of crews and the travelling public.

The westbound on-ramp at Jarvis Street will also experience overnight closures during this first phase of work.
