Residents at a Toronto Community Housing building near Lawrence Avenue and Weston Road say they have been forced to wash with cold water for the last few weeks after the boiler in the building broke.

Crystal Groves lives in the 22-storey building at 5 Bellevue Crescent and said the lack of hot water has been taking a toll on her and her daughter.

“I have a school-aged child, I’m very affected by not having hot water. I’m concerned that by Monday I can’t wash my daughter’s hair and send her to school bathed in hot water,” said Groves. “You don’t feel successful when you get up for work in the morning and you are forced to shower and wash your hair with cold water and it’s just not a good way to start the day.”

She said her landlord has offered no other options for tenants and that Toronto Community Housing is not communicating.

“It just really feels like we are not priorities and nobody cares. And I think our landlord has a responsibility to provide us with adequate rental accommodations and having cold water for this long, for two weeks, is not adequate,” said Groves.

TCHC tells 680 NEWS the boiler was supposed to be fixed before the weekend but now expect the repairs to be done on Monday or Tuesday and the building will continue to be without hot water “intermittently” until then.
