MONTREAL — Hubert Gagnon, the actor who for 27 years voiced Homer Simpson in the Quebecois version of the hit TV show “The Simpsons” has died.
His friend and co-star Johanne Leveille says Gagnon died of cancer on Sunday at the age of 73.
Gagnon acted on stage and in television in addition to voice acting, where he dubbed the voices of many Hollywood stars including Robert De Niro, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere and Nick Nolte into French.
But he was best known for his work on the Simpsons, where he imbued the role of Homer with a particular Quebecois flair.
Leveille, who voices Bart Simpson, says the polite and cultured Gagnon was nothing like the loud, immature character he played on the show.
She says that, like the cartoon Simpsons, the Quebec cast has become like a family and they’re all in mourning over Gagnon’s loss.
