Wasaga Beach restricts beach access after Canada Day overcrowding

By The Canadian Press

An Ontario town is restricting access to a popular beach due to concerns about overcrowding.

Wasaga Beach is says it is closing down the sand-covered stretch of Beach Drive and eliminating half its beachfront parking spaces.

It says the decision was made Thursday in response to the “overwhelming number of people” who attempted to use the beach and ignored physical distancing rules in recent days.

Mayor Nina Bifolchi says Canada Day crowds in particular showed a “complete disregard” for the health guidelines.

She says the town needs to take steps to protect public health.

The town is also asking Ontario Provincial Police to help enforce the rules restricting the size of gatherings.
