PRESTO E-Tickets coming to Durham and Hamilton Transit

By James Mackin

Durham Region and Hamilton residents have a new way to pay for transit.

Metrolinx has unveiled Presto E-Tickets, which you can purchase on your smartphone. Currently, it only applies to Durham Regional Transit, and Hamilton Street Railway trips. They’re replacing paper tickets, and can be used for single use rides, or multiple tickets for group purchases.

Here’s how it works:

  • First, you download the Presto E-Tickets app on your smartphone.
  • Then you register for an account on the app.
  • Pick which transit service you want to take, and purchase however many tickets you’d like. You can pay with either VISA Debit, or a credit card.
  • When you’re getting on your transit service of choice, you simply load up the app, pick your ticket, and hit ‘Activate.’ And away you go.

The tickets are only valid for a single transit service, meaning if you want to transfer to another service like GO Transit, you’ll need to buy a separate fare.

Currently, those are the only two services you can use an E-Ticket for, but Metrolinx plans to expand it to various other transit agencies, including Hamilton’s DART transit.
