Severe thunderstorm watch ended for Toronto, GTA

By News Staff

A severe thunderstorm watch issued by Environment Canada for Toronto and the GTA on Tuesday ended around 7 p.m.

The national weather agency had said dangerous thunderstorms with damaging winds up to 90 kilometres an hour and large, nickel-sized hail was possible in the afternoon and evening.

There were reports of hail outside the GTA and some structural damage due to high winds across cottage country.

Temperatures fell significantly toward the evening from the daytime high of 30 C since the storms tracked through.

Environment Canada also cautioned that thunderstorms have the potential to produce tornadoes, but fortunately none developed during Tuesday’s storms.

Last week, a catastrophic tornado hit Barrie, injuring at least eight people and causing widespread damage to about 25 structures.
