Toronto police say an 18-year-old man who died after he was found injured in a fire at a North York restaurant was the victim of a homicide.

Police and fire crews were called to the Slam Restaurant at 3685 Keele Street at around 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 10.

In a release Tuesday, police say a fire was deliberately set at the restaurant and upon arrival emergency crews found a man on scene who “had obvious injuries as a result of the fire.”

Life-saving measures were attempted, but the man died shortly after in hospital.

He has been identified as Shahriyar Safarian, 18, of Richmond Hill.

Police say Safarian’s death is being treated as an active homicide investigation.

There is no word on suspects at this time.
