Police have charged a woman in the death of a teenage girl who was struck and killed by a vehicle in Scarborough on Tuesday.
Toronto police say a 17-year-old student at nearby Birchmount Park Collegiate was crossing Danforth Avenue on the east side of Birchmount Road when she was struck by a dark grey Dodge Caravan which was turning south from Birchmount to eastbound Danforth just before noon.
The teen was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and was later pronounced dead.
The driver remained on scene.
Police say a 40-year-old woman from Oshawa has been charged with careless driving causing death and not making a safe turn.
In a letter to parents, Birchmount Park Collegiate said support will be provided to students and staff as they grapple with the tragedy.
“TDSB Social Workers and Psychology Staff will be at the school [Wednesday] to offer support and counselling and will remain with us for as long as they are needed,” said the letter.
