Six Mississauga neighbourhoods leading to spike in COVID-19 hospitalizations

As COVID-19 hospitalization rates remain relatively stable across the province, a troublesome situation is brewing in Mississauga’s Trillium hospital system.

As of Thursday morning, there are 31 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Trillium’s three facilities, along with 10 patients in intensive care. Trillium operates Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga Hospital and Queensway Health Centre, which serves both Mississauga and Etobicoke.

The situation is far different in neighbouring Brampton, where just 10 COVID-19 patients are in hospital, with one in intensive care.

According to Mississauga’s mayor, the hospitalization numbers are up significantly over recent weeks, and are higher than any other hospital system in the Greater Toronto Area. Bonnie Crombie is pointing a finger at a few specific areas of her city.

“I’ve spoken with the leadership at Trillium Health Partners and they attribute it to the lower vaccine uptake in six specific neighbourhoods,” said Crombie during her weekly press briefing.

The six neighbourhoods Crombie mentioned are Mississauga Valleys, Applewood, Fairview, Sheridan, Rathburn and Erindale.

Crombie is calling on residents in those six neighbourhoods to roll up their sleeves and get the shot in order to ease pressure on the hospital system.

“We need your help to protect Trillium Health Partners from the situation that we were in earlier this year, where the ICUs were overwhelmed and elective surgeries were being cancelled,” said Crombie.

Roughly 83 per cent of eligible Peel residents are fully vaccinated, but vaccination rates are hovering somewhere in the 70 to 79 per cent range in those six specific Mississauga communities.

According to Peel Region’s top doctor, 95 per cent of the patients currently in Mississauga hospitals aren’t fully vaccinated against the virus.

“This is a reminder that we must all remain vigilant, and we must all get vaccinated as soon as possible,” said Dr. Lawrence Loh, Peel Region’s Medical Officer of Health.
