Ontario reports fewer than 500 new cases of COVID-19, an additional 12 deaths

Ontario reported 492 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday – the 12th straight day that fewer than 500 new infections have been confirmed across the province.

Of those new cases, 325 are in individuals who are unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, or have an unknown vaccination status. There are 167 new cases among those who are fully vaccinated.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases continues to drop, now sitting at 406.

An additional 12 people have died as a result of the virus, bringing the provincial total to 9,839. One of those deaths was added as part of a data cleanup by health officials. There was also an additional death in a long term care resident.

There are 261 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 with 225 of them not fully vaccinated or having an unknown vaccine status. Of those hospitalized, 149 are in the ICU with 126 of them not fully vaccinated or having an unknown vaccine status

Toronto is reporting 64 new cases of COVID-19 while Peel Region added 59 new infections on Thursday. York Region reported a slight uptick with 33 new cases.

A total of 28,906 tests were processed in the previous 24 hour period for a positivity rate of 1.4 per cent.

The province administered 25,770 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday – just under 9,000 were first doses while 16,808 were second doses. Almost 84 per cent of eligible Ontarians 12-years and older are now considered fully vaccinated.

Ontario is expected to reveal details of its plan to ease capacity limits for restaurants and gyms on Friday.

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Kieran Moore, along with Premier Doug Ford, Health Minister Christine Elliott, and Associate Minister of Digital Government Kaleed Rasheed, will be announcing the province’s long-term reopening plan at 2 p.m.

The province paused plans in mid-August to exit Step 3 of its reopening framework as fourth wave cases were rising. Now, daily COVID-19 case counts are stable, and almost 88 per cent of eligible Ontarians have received at least one dose of a vaccine.
