A 27-year-old man is dead after an early-morning shooting in Scarborough.
Toronto police were called to Washburn Way and Tapscott Road, near Sheppard Avenue East and Neilson Road, just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday for reports that a vehicle crashed into the wall of a townhouse.
Police said the driver was found with gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital, where he later died. Homicide investigators have since identified him as Jamal James from Toronto.
“We located evidence of gunfire on or in relation to the car and believe this to have been a shooting,” Const. David Hopkinson told CityNews earlier in the day.
He also said it is not known if the man was shot inside or outside the vehicle.
An eyewitness tells CityNews the force of the crash shook the house.
“I couldn’t believe it and when I came out I didn’t think anybody was in the car, thought they hit and run,” said the resident of the co-op. “The airbags deployed and it was hanging so it looked like a screen so when I moved the airbag I can seem him slumped back.”
The eyewitness added he saw three bullet holes on one side of the vehicle and six on the other side.
Police have yet to release any suspect information.
