The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a 62-year-old man died after Toronto police tried to have him evicted from his home on Wednesday afternoon.
In a release, the SIU said the man flashed a gun when officers arrived at his residence near Keele Street and Finch Avenue in North York to try and serve an eviction notice.
“At approximately 2:23 p.m., Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers responded to the residence,” the SIU said. “TPS officers made contact with the man before a gunshot was heard.”
Officers then entered the residence and found the man with critical injuries. He later died in hospital.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
The SIU says two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates interactions with police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
