Health Canada approves Moderna COVID-19 booster shots

Health Canada has now officially approved booster shots for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

The approval notice was posted to the Health Canada website on Friday.

The Moderna boosters are approved for adults 18 and over to be used at least six months after second doses.

“After a thorough, independent review of the evidence, Health Canada has determined that the Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine booster shot meets the Department’s stringent safety, efficacy and quality requirements,” Health Canada wrote on its website.

“The Spikevax COVID-19 booster is a half dose of the regular vaccine (50 mcg).”

The approval comes days after the Pfizer booster shot received authorization from Health Canada for everyone older than 18.

While administration of boosters is still up to the provinces, several have already announced their plans to provide boosters to the general population in the months ahead and are already giving them to vulnerable populations.

While boosters are being approved and administered, federal health officials still have not changed the definition of fully vaccinated.
