After claiming over 33 per cent of the vote in Monday night’s byelection, David West will be sworn-in as the new mayor of Richmond Hill on Tuesday afternoon.
West bested his closest competitor, Godwin Chan, by nearly 3,000 votes and will serve the rest of the present term, which ends on November 14.
The byelection was called after former mayor, Dave Barrow, announced in September that he would be stepping down from the position after briefly returning to work following a medical leave.
Barrow, who was first elected as mayor in 2006, said he was stepping away to spend more time with family.
In a release, Richmond Hill said a total of 38,909 votes were cast in the byelection — representing 32 per cent voter turnout.
The vast majority of votes, 93 per cent, were cast online.
