Half a dozen young teenagers were arrested following a violent kidnapping in Whitby that saw the group steal a car with the help of an imitation firearm.

Around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, officers with Durham police received reports about unknown trouble in the Queen Street area.

It’s alleged that a concerned citizen called 911, claiming they witnessed a man being assaulted and forced into a white Subaru. That car was located by police, and after a brief pursuit, it was stopped.

Four youths were arrested at the scene. Two others fled on foot but were apprehended a short distance away.

Durham police also seized an imitation firearm and the stolen vehicle.

They said the youths ranged from 12 to 17 years old — two of whom, 16-year-old from Scarborough and a 15-year-old of Hamilton, face additional charges relating to the alleged kidnapping. They include two counts of forcible confinement and two counts of assault.

Durham police said the 15-year-old male was held for a bail hearing. All other youths were released on undertakings.
