Freezing rain, ice pellets expected for Wednesday morning commute

The weather rollercoaster will continue for the GTA this week with a wintry mix on the way and a major temperature swing to follow.

Toronto will escape the deep freeze as temperatures gradually rise throughout the day on Tuesday, but snow and ice pellets could impact the drive to work or school on Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the GTA, including Toronto, saying freezing rain is possible for Wednesday morning and afternoon.

“A mix of freezing rain and ice pellets will be possible Wednesday morning before changing to rain Wednesday afternoon,” the national weather agency says in its statement, adding “there remains considerable uncertainty regarding the timing and amount of freezing rain.”

CityNews meteorologist Jill Taylor says up to two centimetres of snow is expected to start falling around 8 a.m. and will changeover to rain later in the morning. Some areas to the north and east of the city could also experience freezing rain.

“Could see even a centimetre or two of snow before it changes over to some ice pellets and mixes with some rain,” says Taylor. “Just miserable conditions.”

A drastic warm-up will follow the wintry Wednesday with a high of 15 C expected on Thursday. The mild weather won’t stick around for long with a high of 3 C for Friday.

The CityNews guaranteed high for Tuesday is 3 C.

The average high for this time of year is around 8 C and things should return to more seasonal temperatures for the first week of April.
