3 dead in crash along Toronto waterfront

Three people have been pronounced dead after the driver of a white SUV struck two pedestrians in the area of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Superior Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

Three people are dead after a violent single vehicle crash in Toronto’s Mimico neighbourhood.

First responders were called to the intersection of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Superior Avenue, near Humber Bay Park, just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday following numerous calls for pedestrians struck.

Police say a white SUV was driving eastbound on Lake Shore Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it proceeded through a red light and struck two pedestrians who were in the crosswalk. The SUV then struck a flatbed tractor trailer that had been parked in the middle of the roadway as part of a construction zone, ejecting the driver.

“The pedestrians never even saw it coming,” said eyewitness Dan Major, who told CityNews the driver veered into the wrong lane and into oncoming traffic at a high rate of speed before striking the two pedestrians, described as a man and a woman.

“They were just crossing the street at a green light. It’s sick.”

There are unconfirmed reports that the SUV was fleeing the scene of another accident near the intersection of Islington Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard before the fatal crash.

Duty Insp. Kathlin Seremetkovski says they are unable to confirm those reports at this time but added the vehicle was not being pursued by any law enforcement agency.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit tells CityNews it has not been called in by Toronto police.
