Man charged with assault following fight at youth hockey game in Whitby

Durham police have charged a 43-year-old man following an altercation at a youth hockey game in Whitby.

Police were called to Iroquois Park Sports Complex around 10:30 p.m. on Monday.

Police say a fight broke out between two players during an ‘under 16’ hockey game. It’s alleged that following the incident, one of the players was grabbed and shoved by an man while the player was leaving the ice.

Spectators intervened and the altercation spilled out into the parking lot, police say.

Shawn Melo, from Kingston, has been charged with Assault and Causing a Disturbance by Fighting.

Investigators are asking anyone with information or video related to this incident to contact police.
