Toronto to provide free admission to history museums year-round

The City of Toronto has announced they will be providing free general admission to 10 history museums across the city.

Mayor John Tory made the announcement Friday as he proclaimed May as Museum Month. The free admission will begin May 1 and remain permanent year-round.

The historic sites that residents can now enter for free are Colborne Lodge, Fort York National Historic Site, Gibson House Museum, Mackenzie House, Market Gallery, Montgomery’s Inn, Scarborough Museum, Spadina Museum, Todmorden Mills, and Zion Schoolhouse.

“This Museums Month and beyond, I encourage all residents to visit Toronto History Museums to learn about Toronto’s past, present and future,” said Tory in a statement.

Toronto History Museums says they want to ensure “equitable access to museum sites and provide everyone an opportunity to participate in cultural heritage and spaces.”

The City says this is just one initiative designed to improve accessibility to cultural spaces for Toronto residents. The Toronto History Museums says they are also committed to “dismantling museums’ ongoing colonial mission, vision and narrative.”

“Grounded in equity, anti-racism and anti-oppression, all 10 Toronto History Museums began to re-evaluate the stories they share, and the way they are shared, in order to create space for communities and impart knowledge.”
