Toronto police are investigating after a Scarborough MPP discovered more than a dozen of her campaign signs were vandalized.

Mitzie Hunter tells CityNews that her team received an email from a local resident “who was outraged.”

The Liberal MPP for Scarborough-Guildwood said that members of the community discovered the signs, covered with hateful, racist graffiti in the Ellesmere and Markham area.

Toronto police say as many as 20 of Hunter’s election signs were vandalized. Vulgar and derogatory words were written on the signs, police said in a news release.

Hunter said she was disgusted but she knew these actions did not represent the community. “This is my fourth election and this is the first time I’ve experienced this hateful language,” she told CityNews.

“I myself was on my way to a long-term care home at Ellesmere and Neilson, and I ended driving by and being quite shocked… I actually had to stop and look at them,” she said.

“There were 16 of my signs that were spray-painted with just horrible language, and you know, as I said I don’t believe that this reflects our community,” Hunter said, adding when she was surveying the damage, someone drove up and said, “this is not us.”

Hunter is running for re-election for the third time.

Toronto police are seeking the assistance of the public to identify the unknown person.

Despite the shocking graffiti, Hunter said she had a good Mother’s Day on the campaign, visiting several retirement and long-term care homes.
