An 85-year-old woman died after she was fatally struck by a city street sweeper near Toronto’s Bridle Path.

Police were called to the Lawrence Avenue East and Leslie Street area in North York just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday following reports that a street sweeper hit a woman.

The pedestrian, confirmed to be an 85-year-old woman, was walking eastbound on Tremont Crescent when she was struck by the city-owned vehicle.

Officers arrived on the scene and determined the injuries were critical. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the City of Toronto street sweeper was being operated by a 39-year-old man, who is cooperating with police.

A spokesperson with the City of Toronto acknowledged the fatality in a statement.

“The city is aware of a tragic incident this morning involving a street sweeper and a pedestrian,” the official said.

“The city is cooperating fully with the police and their investigation. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, as well as our employee, at this very difficult time.”

Const. Laura Brabant is urging residents in the Tremont Crescent area with video surveillance to contact investigators.
