Video of 2 people ‘surfing’ on top of Line 3 train sparks TTC investigation

Video surfacing on Youtube on Canada Day shows two people train surfing on TTC Line 3. It's not clear when it was filmed. The TTC says they have pulled video and are investigating.

A video posted on YouTube appearing to show two people ‘surfing’ on top of a TTC Line 3 Scarborough RT train on Canada Day has sparked investigations by authorities.

It’s not clear when exactly the incident happened or where the two people boarded the train, but TTC spokesperson Stuart Green said the transit agency is aware of the video in question. He said surveillance cameras on the TTC stations and trains captured footage related to this instance of ‘train surfing.’

“We take incidents like this seriously and will prosecute to the full extent of the law,” he told CityNews in an email statement Monday morning.

“(It) goes without saying that stunts like this are incredibly dangerous and illegal. They can lead to serious injury or death as well as service delays and massive inconvenience for our customers.”

A statement issued by the Toronto Police Service Monday morning said the TTC is currently taking the lead on the investigation, adding criminal charges could be laid in relation to these types of stunts.

In the four-minute-and-28-second video posted to YouTube on Monday, it opens with low-level drone footage appearing to show Line 3 trains on the rail corridor north of Kennedy station.

The video goes on to show the two people climbing onto the top of the middle train car from the exit door of the rear train car. As the masked individuals go on to pull out Canadian flags, a sweeping drone shot shows the pair just feet below a pedestrian bridge as the train rushes beneath it.

“Happy Canada Day, let’s go,” one of two can be heard saying.

When the train approaches Kennedy station and the pair walks back and forth on top of the train, one of the people can be heard saying, “Let’s do the jump.”

As the train pulls into the top level of Kennedy station, the individuals can be seen laying flat on top of the train, holding on to the sides of it.

“Get out terminal level. Go down one and out,” one of the people can be heard saying.

As the train moves along to the end of the platform with dozens of waiting passengers below looking on, one of the two people slides off the side while still in motion. The second person starts bolting along the top of the moving train, uttering, “Time to go.”

With the train stopped, the second person jumps down and both individuals can be seen running down the stairs, out onto the bus bay and then jumping a construction fence. As they walk away from the station, they could be heard saying, “Happy Canada Day.”

In the latter half of the video when it is at sunset or sunrise, two masked individuals can once again be seen climbing on top of a moving Line 3 train. The wind force knocked a baseball hat off of one of the people. Cutting between drone and handheld footage, one of the people appears to stick something in their mouth and pulls out a lighter.

The video ends with them inside the train, encouraging a passenger to “say hi to YouTube,” before running down an escalator and out of the station.

“Nothing personal TTC,” the last caption said.

Meanwhile, it’s not clear if the individuals have been identified by authorities. It’s also not known what specific charges they could face if caught.
