Toronto’s 50 speed cameras resulted in 54,204 tickets over April and May

The City of Toronto’s 50 Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are supposed to deter speeding. That objective was not met for 3,776 repeat offenders, including one person who was ticketed 11 times for driving over the limit on the same street.

Another was recorded driving 146 km/h in a 50 km/h speed limit zone.

Those are just some of the eye-opening statistics the City released on Tuesday after compiling another two months’ worth of ASE data.

In total, 54,204 tickets were issued from 50 ASEs near schools in Community Safety Zones in April and May.

Where are most people being nabbed?

In April, the device on Mill Road north of Burnhamthorpe Road (Etobicoke Centre) issued the most tickets at 5,545. That accounted for 16 per cent of all tickets, the City said in a release.

In May, the device on Parkside Drive south of Algonquin Avenue (Parkdale-High Park) issued the most tickets at 2,845.

The City notes that signs are posted at all locations to warn drivers that the cameras are in use, and if you are ticketed through an ASE, you’ll receive a set fine and won’t incur any demerit points.

However, if you’re nabbed going 50 km/h or more over the limit, you’ll have your day in court.

“Under provincial regulations, there is no set fine or out-of-court settlement for charges related to excessive speeding (50km/h or more over the limit),” the City said.

“Instead, a summons is served to the registered vehicle owner to appear in court.

“To date, 430 Part III charges have been laid since the start of enforcement on July 6, 2020.”
