GO Transit workers threaten strike that could halt bus service; Staffing shortages cancel train trips

Go Bus drivers, attendants and mechanics have voted in favour of a strike if necessary, while several train employees are off sick forcing Metrolinx to cancel some trips.

It’s already been a summer of delays and cancellations for GO train riders as COVID outbreaks have exacerbated staffing shortages.

Now, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1587 is threatening a strike that could bring a halt to GO bus service.

About 2,200 bus drivers, station attendants, transit safety officers, and fleet mechanics have voted in favour of a strike, if necessary. The ATU is accusing Metrolinx of refusing to negotiate on critical issues, including job security, wages and improved work-life balance.

A date has not been set for a strike, but the president of the union says the 93 per cent vote in favour is the largest mandate in the union’s history. President Rob Cormier has also accused Metrolinx of stalling negotiations since they began in April.

Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Mare Aikins tell CityNews the agency will continue to “negotiate in good faith.” She says she is hopeful both sides will be able to come to an agreement and avoid any work stoppage.

“Both side are still trying to work it out and we feel very positive,” she says.

The ATU said its members have been working under an expired contract since June 1.

Staffing shortages continue to impact GO train service

A number of GO trains have been cancelled in recent days, including Monday morning trips on the Lakeshore East and Kitchener lines, as a result of staff illnesses.

“We ask customers to check ahead,” says Aikins. “We make sure we pick a train (to cancel) that has an option right after it, or before it.”

“For the next week or two there may be more cancellations than we expected.”

Metrolinx is advising riders to check for service updates on their website before travelling, or to check their bus or train line’s Twitter handle to know about schedule changes, cancellations and trip adjustments as they happen in real time.
