Man killed by police after taking hold of child with a knife; SIU investigating

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after officers shot and killed a man while responding to reports of a stabbing in Scarborough on Saturday afternoon.

Officers responded to reports that a woman was stabbed near a residence on Midland Avenue, just north of Kingston Road, around 2:30 p.m.

Upon arrival at the home they located a woman suffering from injuries, a male suspect with a knife, and a child.

Police say the 42-year-old man took hold of a child and entered a home. He was shot by three responding officers.

Both the man and the woman were transported to hospital with serious injuries. Police Chief James Ramer later confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the hospital and the woman is in stable condition.

Police also confirmed the child did not suffer any injuries.

The province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate and are now investigating.

“The SIU is going to investigate the interaction between the individual and the police,” Ramer says. “At the same time, we will simultaneously investigate the stabbing of the female.”

The SIU is responsible for investigating circumstances involving police that result in a death or serious injury.
