Major construction on Highway 401 in west GTA nearing completion

By Kyle Hocking

Drivers got their first taste of a wider Highway 401 in Milton this past week with the opening of a newly built section of express and collector lanes.

The westbound lanes of the 401 now feature an express and collector lane system between the Highway 407 interchange and James Snow Parkway.

The new lanes are part of a larger, $640 million project which will see an 18-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 widened between the Credit River in Mississauga, and Highway 25 in Milton.

A 12-lane express and collector system will soon open each way between the Credit River and Winston Churchill Boulevard as well as a 10-lane section between Winston Churchill and Highway 407.

Big relief coming to 401 drivers

Both east and westbound lanes will also feature the express and collector lane system between Highway 407 and James Snow Parkway and will see a newly widened 10-lane section between James Snow and Highway 25.

Several bridges and overpasses in the area are also being rebuilt to facilitate a wider 401.

Construction has been underway since October of 2019 and Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation says the entire project should be completed by the end of 2022, but no exact date for further openings of lanes has been given.
