More rain expected Monday after storms caused flooding in parts of GTA

    Cloudy with showers and the risk of a thunderstorm on Monday, the start of what is likely to be a hot, humid and stormy week in the GTA.

    Anyone with outdoor plans in the GTA on Monday will want to be sure to pack the rain gear.

    More showers or thunderstorms are expected to begin the work week after severe weather made its way through the region on Sunday evening causing flooding in some spots.

    A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada for the City of Toronto and parts of Durham Region warning of “slow-moving showers and thunderstorms” with local rainfall from 30 to 50 millimetres expected.

    “We continue to sit with this unsettled wet weather here across southern Ontario,” says CityNews weather specialist Denise Andreacchi. “For the GTA, that means scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms again today.”

    She says the risk of a thunderstorms will be greater in the evening.

    Storms moved through the GTA on Sunday, bringin heavy rains and flooding to some streets and homes.

    A concert at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage featuring Whitesnake and Scorpions was temporarily shut down as concert goers had to take cover from the downpour.

    Another big show is taking place at the outdoor venue on Monday evening as Duran Duran takes to the stage. Those attending that show or the CNE should be prepared for more wet weather.

    Environment Canada issued several weather advisories for the region in the afternoon, including a severe thunderstorm warning in Peel and a special weather statement for Toronto and York Region.

    Many areas of Brampton and Caledon saw around 100 millimetres of rain after a “nearly stationary” storm there. Video captured by a local resident showed someone kayaking down a street near Hurontario Street and Highway 410.

    The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is warning of the potential for higher than normal water levels within GTA lakes and rivers until Tuesday morning due to the widespread showers and storms.

    Toronto is not expected to have a break from the wet weather until Wednesday, with the weather agency forecasting another day with a chance showers for Tuesday.
